Special Lecture On Theme Of Social Issues In The Novels Of Mulk Raj Anand And R K Narayan

A special lecture on “Theme of social issues in the novels of Mulk Raj Anand and R.K.Narayan” was organized on 30th July 2019 for the students of III Semester B.Com and BCA. Dr. M. S. Palaksha, HOD & Associate Professor, Department of English, Maharani’s Science College, Mysuru was invited as the resource an evil practice and its harsh reality and effects on the lower class people. The character of Bakha, Lakha – the representatives of outcaste colony, the relationship between Lakha and his children, the pathetic situation of Sohini, the evil thinking of Pandit Kali Nath, the helpless condition of Bakha, the influence of Mahatma Gandhiji, person. The speaker gave an insight to the picture of India and the social issues that prevailed in the Indian Society during the independence era. He highlighted the contributions of Indian writers in English during 20th century and their contributions to English Literature. Students were briefed about the realistic and naturalistic writers. The contributions of Mulkraj Anand as a realistic writer and the significance of portraying the social issues prevailed – like caste system in his novels was highlighted during the lecture. The important incidents, scenes from the novel, Untouchable by Mulkraj Anand were quoted to stress the portrayal of casteism as Iqbal on Bakha were explained by narrating the incidents from the novel. The speaker also spoke about the contributions of R. K. Narayan as a naturalistic writer. The characterization of various characters in the novel, The Financial Expert – like Margayya, Meenakshi, the influence of Dr. Pal in the life of Margayya and his son Balu, the concept of influence of money and the people struggling to achieve a good status in the society with the money etc were explained by narrating the incidents from the novel. Ms. Megha of III Sem BCA welcomed the gathering. The programme concluded with a thanking note from Ms.Nagasri S, Assistant Professor of English, HFGC.
